Information on Feline Care in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin
Did you know that the cat was first domesticated (or so we humans like to think) over 4,000 years ago? Ancient humans saw wild cats hunting rodents around their grain stores and quickly realized that both species would benefit from living together. If you decide to add a furry feline to your home you should know and understand the costs necessary to care for them. Food dishes, litter pan, collar and carrier will be around $75. Annually; food costs $200, cat litter $150, medical care $150 and don’t forget treats and toys, that’s $50 a year.
Adult cats should be fed 2-3 small meals a day, while kittens less than 6 months of age need to eat 4 meals a day. All cats must have access to fresh water at all times. Pet fountains are a great idea for cats.
Most cats keep themselves clean and don’t need to be bathed. You should trim their claws every 1-2 months and provide them with a scratching post to help them remove old material from their claws. Otherwise, just a nice bonding session spent brushing or combing your cat should be all the grooming you need to do.
While most cats stay indoors it is still very important to make sure they receive annual vaccines, physical exams at least once a year, and have their stool checked for parasites. We may recommend bloodwork to check for any underlying health problems, or a dental procedure to help keep your cat happy and healthy.
The rule for litter boxes is 1 box per cat plus one. So, if you have 1 cat you should have 2 boxes; 2 cats, 3 boxes and so on. Keep the boxes in a quiet and accessible area of your home. If you have a multi-level home make sure there is a box on each floor. Solid waste should be cleaned out every day and the boxes completely emptied and washed with mild detergent and hot water once a week. If you use a clumping litter you can do this less frequently.
